  1. Hi Tal! I’m Marina, from Buenos Aires.. I don’t know how i get to this blog but I just loved it. I’ve been in Bolivia this year, around March.. and i’m planning to go to Perú the next march, in 2010. But i was wondering, when you’ve been in Cusco and made the Camino del Inca, what package have you chosen? the one of 2 days or the one of 4 days? which one you reccomend? I don’t know yet which one i will choose because i don’t know if i can make it 4 days walking with the bag and that altitude! I’m 23 years also, and i shouldn’t have this kind of problems, but i’m a little -or al lot- lazy, although i love these kind of trips and it would be a dream to me being in Machu Picchu. So i’ll wait your answer please! Oh, and also, how much did you paid for the hole package of the Camino del Inca? so i know aproximately how much it cost… Ok thank you very much, and keep having fun!!!!

    • Hello Marina!
I hope you loved Bolivia as much as I did.. Peru was quite great as well so I am really happy you will get to go there in the spring next year! I did the 4 day trek with my parents which was incredible! Most companies have porters so you do not actually carry anything but a small bag. If you come to Cusco a few days before you start treking it’s good too because you get more used to the altitude. If you want to do the real/original Inca trail, I suggest you book it far in advance but it is a bit more expensive. There are 2 other trails that end in Machu Picchu-the Inca Jungle and the Salkantay, both cheaper and usually shorter but supposedly just as nice. Of course, if you chose one of these options you will still enjoy every minute but you will miss out on other smaller Inca ruins that are along the Inca trail itself. If you do choose the second option, I would suggest getting a deal once arriving to Cusco simply because it’s cheaper and you can usually talk to them about dropping the price and getting exactly what you want. I hope this helped, if you have more questions, let me know. I do not recall the exact price, but I do know that every company varies. By this time next year I am sure the prices will have increased so upon arrival in Cusco, visit a few travel agencies and they will give you a more updated price.
      Good luck!

  2. Hi Tal- First off, I want to tell you how much I loved your blog- such a great idea.

My question to you is small but important: Do you know of any good handheld GPS systems for hiking? Did you use anything like that on your trips? If so- which ones did you like or what else worked for you?

    Thanks for the advice!

    • Hello Dana! Thanks for the compliment!
About your question…I personally did not use a GPS system, I didn’t feel it was too necessary since before every trek you register at the park’s office and if you are not back on the date you write, they will look for you. There are good websites though that you can find good GPS systems REI is just one good place to look.
Another great website that is dedicated to GPS systems while hiking is http://www.hikinggpsstore.com/
Take a look! Hope it helps! :)
